English as a Second Language: Program Student Learning Outcomes

ESL students effectively listen to and speak with people of diverse backgrounds to fulfill communication tasks as workers, family members, community members, and/or lifelong learners.
ESL students demonstrate appropriate reading and critical thinking skills to process information related to their roles as workers, family members, community members, and/or lifelong learners.
ESL students demonstrate effective writing skills to fulfill writing tasks as workers, family members, community members, and/or lifelong learners.

English as a Second Language: Student Learning Outcomes on Writing for ESL courses

Beginning Low – Levels 1/2

Using previously learned key vocabulary, students write simple sentences based on a single topic or picture, or a series of sequential pictures.

Beginning High – Level 3

Using a process approach, students write sentences to form a simple paragraph or a simple note based on personal experiences or familiar themes.

Intermediate Low – Level 4

Using a process approach, students write 1 descriptive, process, or narrative paragraph or note with a main idea and supporting details.

Intermediate High – Level 5

Using a process approach, students write a composition of 2-3 paragraphs on a personal topic or a narrative report of an experience or event. Each paragraph in the composition or report will include a topic sentence and supporting details.

Advanced Low – Level 6

Using a process approach, students write a formal business letter or an organized essay or composition of 3-4 paragraphs on a personal topic.

Advanced High – Level 7

Using a process approach, students write a narrative report or a 4-5 paragraph essay on a non-personal topic partially related to research or readings.

VESL

Using a process approach, students write a work-related composition of 2-5 paragraphs or an incident report or a business letter. Each paragraph in the composition or report will include a topic sentence and supporting details.
