What do welders earn?
Starting wages for welders can vary. The range is between $7.50 and $16.00 per hour, depending upon the employer. Generally, Union wages are the highest. Welders who work their way up to the journeyman level are making as much as $36.12 per hour in San Diego County, plus benefits.
What is needed to become successful in this field?
Most employers require that welders have a High School Diploma or G.E.D. Also, it is very important that students develop strong reading, writing and math skills (algebra and trigonometry); computer literacy; consistency and reliability; and excellent communication skills. With a solid grasp of academic fundamentals, good welding skills and consistent work experience, a welder may go on to become an Educator, Inspector, Contractor, Business Owner or Sales Representative. Welding training may also inspire ambitious students to pursue a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering at a 4-year University.
